fingerprint technology

A fingerprint is an impression of the friction ridges on all parts of the finger.Fingerprint identification is the process of comparing questioned and known friction skin ridge impressions from fingers to determine if the impressions are from the same finger. The flexibility of friction ridge skin means that no two finger prints are ever exactly alike (never identical in every detail), even two impressions recorded immediately after each other. Fingerprint identification occurs when an expert determines that two friction ridge impressions originated from the same finger to the exclusion of all others. Friction ridges can be recorded digitally using a technique called Live-Scan.

Fingerprint capture and detection - Fingerprint image acquisition is considered the most critical step of an automated fingerprint authentication system, as it determines the final fingerprint image quality, which has drastic effects on the overall system performance. There are different types of fingerprint readers on the market, but the basic idea behind each capture approach is to measure in some way the physical difference between ridges and valleys. All the proposed methods can be grouped in two major families: solid-state fingerprint readers and optical fingerprint readers. The procedure for capturing a fingerprint using a sensor consists of rolling or touching with the finger onto a sensing area, which according to the physical principle in use (capacitive, optical, thermal, acoustic, etc.) captures the difference between valleys and ridges.

Fingerprint matching techniques can be placed into two categories: minutae-based and correlation based. Minutiae-based techniques first find minutiae points and then map their relative placement on the finger. However, there are some difficulties when using this approach. It is difficult to extract the minutiae points accurately when the fingerprint is of low quality. Also this method does not take into account the global pattern of ridges and furrows. The correlation-based method is able to overcome some of the difficulties of the minutiae-based approach. However, it has some of its own shortcomings. Correlation-based techniques require the precise location of a registration point and are affected by image translation and rotation.

Classifying fingerprints - There are complex classification systems that further break down patterns to plain arches or tented arches. Loops may be radial or ulnar, depending on the side of the hand the tail points towards. Whorls also have sub-group classifications including plain whorls, accidental whorls, double loop whorls, peacock's eye, accidental, composite, and central pocket loop whorls.

Research

Oh well, yesterday evening i went to the library to search for article that could help me up.. i try to find some thesis done by seniors but the procedure was too complicated there.. i ended up gaining nothing there.. haha..

But it was a great day yesterday. i went to UTM Registry Department to obtain more information for my project. i was entertained by a lady(the person in charge)who is taking control of the whole panel clinic system. I had words with her for about an hour. She gave me a lot of information that i couldn't really get from internet. Wat i mean is more practical! She told me that there is a system being built but the system is not implemented on real life as the system is not stable. And yet, she told me to create a better system for UTM. I overwhelmed to know that if i can manage a more reliable system, then i could really help the department up!

Now i realized that they are actually altering some idea of panel clinic. Instead of letting each staffs to have 2 clinics, they hope that the staffs can visit all the panel clinic out there. The current system have 2 users, which is the admin and panel clinic staff. But i hope to add another user, that is the staff. With this, the staff could look upon the detail of the visit and drug used. Still thinking.. not sure whether it's a good idea.

She did mentioned that the manual system was a complicated and tedious job! Plus, over this year, the form that is used for many purposes(adding new user, changing of P.C, registration, adding spouse, etc..) has made the up to tonnes of paper in the cupboard! Thus, she hope that a system could be developed to overcome this problem.

Fingerprint Application for Panel Clinic System

Well.. i'm just gonna briefly go through this... I've previously asked many person from my classmate and even other course mate about panel clinic. But frankly, they just have no idea what is it all about. Well, this happened the same to me when i was being told about this idea.

Basically, panel clinic happens to be any clinic outside that have the kinda relationship with the particular institute. I limited the scope to just UTM staffs. Panel clinic provides medical treatment with the idea of the payment being settled by the institute - UTM. Whenever they approach the clinic, the staffs will show their "panel clinic book" for identity checking purposes and the clinic will settle the payment with UTM. Therefore, the problem arises when any of them forgot to bring the book or accidently lost it!

Then come this idea of Fingerprint Application for Panel Clinic System. By using this application, clinic staffs will not have to record down any information manually, plus, the staffs will only have to bring along their finger! ha.. The system will search the information of the staff in the database based on the matching of the fingerprint. Then the clinic will update any latest treatment to the university database either daily, weekly or monthly(haven really decide until i develop the database)..

Thus, it's hoped that the application will bring efficiency in terms of speed and how the data is kept.
